To build a common space in which to share experiences that can lead to greater equality and citizen empowerment, can enhance the valid authority of public administrations and people’s trust in them, and improve the efficiency of public management.
To promote cooperation between local governments to confront globalization by creating new institutions and constructing new spaces for discussion, exchange and social solidarity.
To study the concept of participatory democracy through reflection, analysis and the promotion of coordinated research projects and technical support among active IOPD associate and collaborating members.
To make headway in the practical implementation of participatory-democracy experiences, while regarding participation as a valuable tool with which to strengthen democracy and stimulate citizens’ role in the discussion, design and implementation of public policies.
To promote the creation of mechanisms and systems to evaluate local participatory experiences that make it possible to measure their development and quality, issue opinions on such actions and enhance the role of citizens in local government.
