10th OIDP Conference– Mexico DF
17, 18 and 19 November 2010
On 17, 18 and 19 November 2010 the 10th Annual OIDP Conference will be held in Mexico City – the city that holds the Presidency of the Network in 2010- under the title: “Global Crisis, Participatory Democracy and Local Alternatives”.
Central Theme: Global Crisis, Participatory Democracy and Local Alternatives
Given the current scenario of global crisis, the local side of things plays an important role in the search for alternatives that are more uncoordinated as a response to the impact of the multiple expressions of the crisis and its effects on both population and the diversity of social actors.
Within this framework, some of the key questions to be debated at the 10th Conference of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy are: What is the specific nature and extent of this crisis? How is the crisis manifesting itself at local level? What are the main problems that are being presented at local level as a result of the current crisis: climate, energy, food, institutions, politics, ethics and, finally, economic/financial? What solutions can participatory democracy, at local level, bring to this multiple crisis of western civilisation?
Overall goal
To reflect on and debate the impact of the current global crisis on towns and cities, along with their alternative responses to it, from local processes to the multiple dimensions of participatory democracy: political, social, cultural, environmental, economic and legal-institutional, for the purpose of strengthening citizenship, social movements, local government and their different networks and organisations, so that they can face up to the crisis effectively.
