IOPD activities in Habitat 3

Description

Habitat III is the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development to take place in Quito, Ecuador, from 17 – 20 October 2016. At this summit the New Urban Agenda will be approved, this agenda will guide the efforts around urbanization of a wide range of actors — nation states, city and regional leaders, international development funders, United Nations programmes and civil society — for the next 20 years. Inevitably, this agenda will also lay the groundwork for policies and approaches that will extend, and impact, far into the future.

The IOPD co-organize two networking events in order to defend the need for urban development in democratic cities, giving great importance to citizen participation in urban planning.

International experiences with participatory budgeting networks

Tuesday 18th from 2 to 4 pm in Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana “Benjamín Carrión”, Room 19. This event will be organized by the IOPD, the Brazilian Network of Participatory Budgeting and the City of Canoas, which chair the IOPD in 2014. At this session we will learn about international experiences with PB networks and discuss key questions for countries working with this tool. The meeting will promote a reflection on innovative forums of citizen participation in the 21st Century, which guarantees the citizen empowerment, the social inclusion and the access to basic services and the right to the city.
